A restaurant built for evenings that linger

From a Federal Street dining room to a local favourite

Brightwildlife opened its doors in 2018, in the middle of Auckland's busiest dining precinct — a room of timber, stone and linen that was always meant to feel like somewhere you could settle in for the whole evening.

Director James Whitmore had spent years working in New Zealand kitchens and dining rooms, and wanted to build a restaurant that took the food seriously without taking itself too seriously. Eight years on, that idea still guides everything we do — from the way the menu is written to the way a poker night is run.

The poker evenings began almost by accident: a few regulars staying late over cards after dinner. They became a fixture, and today our Thursday poker nights are a small tradition of their own — always in person, always at the restaurant, always with dinner at the centre of the evening.

Let the ingredient lead

Our kitchen's approach is simple: start with the best seasonal produce we can find, and don't get in its way.

That means market fish handled gently and served fresh, pasture-raised meats cooked with patience, and vegetables treated as more than a garnish. Dishes are contemporary but grounded — you'll recognise every plate as food first.

On poker nights the kitchen keeps pace differently: plates that sit comfortably beside cards and conversation, served steadily through the evening so nobody has to choose between the game and dinner.

Service that remembers you're a person

Good hospitality isn't theatre — it's noticing things. A regular's usual table. A first-timer's questions about the menu. The moment a poker player needs dinner held for ten minutes.

Our front-of-house team is small and stable, which means the people who greet you are the same people who looked after you last time. It's the kind of service a neighbourhood restaurant does best.
